ALAN T. LEWIS, M.D
Dr. Lewis received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Medical Center of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1997. He was also inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Lewis completed his internship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and went on to complete a dermatology residency at that same institution. After completion of his dermatology residency in 2001, Dr. Lewis completed an additional accredited fellowship in Dermatologic Surgery and Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here he trained with Dr. Anthony Benedetto, who was one of Dr Frederick Mohs’ original fellows. He also assisted in the training of dermatology residents at the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson and Drexel Hill medical schools.
Upon completion of his surgery fellowship, he returned to the New Orleans area and took a position with the Tulane Department of Dermatology. He held the position of Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Dermatologic Surgery section within Tulane Dermatology up until 2011. During this time, Dr. Lewis was involved in teaching the residents of Tulane Dermatology in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, post-surgical reconstruction, cutaneous oncology and a myriad of cosmetic surgical procedures. He was also the director of the Mohs Surgery section at the Tulane Cancer Center. While with Tulane, Dr. Lewis worked at Tulane Dermatology Affiliates in Gulfport. It was here that Dr. Lewis started the first Mohs surgery center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
In 2011, Dr. Lewis left Tulane to pursue a career in private practice, as this gave him greater freedom to devote to patient care. Dr. Lewis is still involved in resident education at Tulane and still holds the title of Clinical Associate Professor there.
Tulane Dermatology Affiliates changed its name to Modern Dermatology and Aesthetics, as its two remaining charter members were no longer full time employees of Tulane Health Science Center. To serve the skin cancer patients that Dr. Lewis had in the New Orleans metro area, he opened Crescent DermSurgery in Metairie, LA.
Dr. Lewis holds memberships in the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgeons, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr Lewis is has also been listed as a Castle-Connoly Top Doctor in his field.
Dr. Lewis has a strong interest in Mohs skin cancer surgery, cutaneous oncology, including malignant melanoma. He is the author of a number of articles on cosmetic dermatology and cutaneous oncology. He has lectured at a number of national and international meetings and has a number of publications on these subjects.
